Siemens MC35 (and other models) GSM Modem Status LEDs

LED Status
Off Power off or sleep mode
Flashing slowly and evenly No SIM card inserted, No SIM PIN entered, network search or network login in progress

GSM Terminal SIM and Network Coverage Tests

The SIM must not have a PIN code set, if the SIM has a PIN code set use a GSM phone to remove the PIN. Place the SIM into the GSM modem, connect the antenna, power and RS232 cable.

Connect the GSM modem to a COMS port of PC start Hyperterminal (under accessories, communications in most Windows OS)

Set up the following in a new connection in Hyperterminal
Baud - 19200, Bits - 8, Parity - None, Stop bits - 1, Flow Control - None

Type the following AT commands
AT - should return OK
AT+CREG? - if registered on network second value should be 1
AT+COPS? - returns Network operator eg. VODAFONE
AT+CSQ - checks signal strength, value should be greater than 10

Setting up MC35iT to Auto Answer a Data Call

The SIM card for the MC35iT must have a Terminating Circuit Switched Data Number to receive data calls (this may be a different number to a GPRS number).

Connect the GSM modem to a COMS port of PC start Hyperterminal (under accessories, communications in most Windows OS)

Set up the following in a new connection in Hyperterminal
Baud - 19200, Bits - 8, Parity - None, Stop bits - 1, Flow Control - None

ATS0 = 2 (answer in 2 rings)

AT&W (save settings)

AT&V (check current profile and S0,002)

When dialing the modem from another device the modem will now answer after 2 rings.

GPRS Setup for Siemens MC35iT:

The commands for to setup GPRS on the MC35iT from a terminal session are:

AT^SGAUTH=1
AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP,"Telstra.Internet"
AT*99***1#

Each command is executed with a CR (Enter) and will return OK.

The second line above is the APN for Telstra.
For Vodafone it's "VFINTERNET.AU"
For Optus it's "INTERNET"

How to send SMS from Siemens GSM Terminals TC35, MC35:

Using any Terminal program (e.g. Hyper Terminal) you can send and receive SMS via the Siemens TC35i, MC35i or MC35iT:
There are only 3 AT commands required to send SMS which are:
AT+CSCA="xxxxx" where xxxxx is the network SMS Central number
AT+CMGF=1
AT+CMGS="####" where #### is the phone number you want to send the message to followed by a CR which will give you a prompt.

You can then type the message you want then follow it with a CTRL+Z (that is CONTROL button and Z button pressed together)

To Receive SMS type AT+CMGR=1
